Art Direction

MR Magazine

Project Overview

Role
Art Director

MR Magazine is a respected publication in the menswear industry, covering fashion, retail, culture, and editorial storytelling through a strong mix of industry perspective and visual communication.

As Art Director, my approach was to bring greater clarity, rhythm, and visual cohesion to the publication while preserving the character that made it recognizable. I focus on building editorial systems that feel structured but not rigid, giving each story enough flexibility to stand on its own while still contributing to a consistent overall identity. For me, strong editorial design is not just about arranging content. It is about pacing, hierarchy, tone, and knowing when to be restrained and when to create a more expressive visual moment.

⟣ Editorial Design Approach

My work for MR Magazine centered on creating layouts that feel clear, intentional, and visually balanced. I use typography, grid structure, spacing, and image relationships to guide the reader through a story in a way that feels natural and engaging. The goal is always to make the content feel elevated and easy to move through, without overdesigning or distracting from the editorial voice.

⟣ Visual Direction & Custom Illustration

For select stories, I introduced custom illustration to create a more distinctive visual moment within the magazine. I see illustration as an extension of the editorial concept, not just decoration. When used intentionally, it adds personality, depth, and a stronger point of view to the page while still feeling integrated within the larger design system.

⟣ Design System & Consistency

Because the magazine covers a wide range of content, the design system needed to be flexible enough to support different kinds of stories without losing cohesion. My approach was to create a consistent visual foundation, then adapt that structure across features, profiles, market coverage, and special sections so the publication feels unified while allowing each piece to have its own rhythm.

✦ Project Insight

What matters most in my work is creating design that feels both thoughtful and alive. I am interested in editorial systems that bring order to complex content while still leaving room for expression, character, and visual nuance. With MR Magazine, that meant shaping a design language that could support the publication over time while continuing to make space for memorable and story specific visual moments.
